What Are Corners in Soccer?

A corner, or corner kick, restarts play when the ball goes out over the goal line off a defending player, without a goal being scored. The attacking team then kicks it back in from the nearest corner arc. Premier League matches are averaging 9.93 corners per game this season, according to tracking site APWin, one reason corners have become a betting market of their own.

What Is a Corner Kick in Soccer?

A corner kick is awarded when the ball crosses the goal line, without a goal being scored, last touched by someone on the defending side. It doesn’t matter whether the touch was deliberate or a desperate clearance. Either way, the attacking team gets to restart play from the corner nearest to where the ball went out.

The idea is older than most people assume. It was first proposed in a letter to the Sheffield Daily Telegraph in 1867, written to stop defenders simply booting the ball behind their own goal to kill an attack. Sheffield’s own rules adopted it the following year, and the Football Association made it law across English football on 17 February 1872.

How Does a Corner Kick Work?

The ball has to be placed inside the corner arc, the small quarter-circle at the edge of the pitch closest to where it went out. Opposing players must stand at least 10 yards back until the kick is taken, and the offside rule doesn’t apply to a player receiving the ball straight from a corner. The kicker can’t touch the ball a second time until someone else has, and a goal scored directly from a corner does count, though it happens rarely enough that commentators still make a fuss about it.

Why Do Corners Matter Tactically?

A corner puts the ball into the box with several attackers grouped near goal and only a short pass needed to create a shot, which makes it one of the highest-value chances in open play. Most teams work off practiced routines rather than winging it:

• Near-post flick-ons, where a player glances the ball on for a teammate arriving at the far post
• Far-post deliveries aimed at the tallest player in the box
• Short corners, played square to a teammate to draw defenders out and open space for a cross or shot
• Zonal or man-marking setups on defense, sometimes a mix of both depending on the opponent’s threats

Defenses usually keep one or two players forward too, in case a cleared corner turns into a counterattack the other way.

Corners as a Betting Market

Corners have grown into a betting market of their own, separate from who wins the match. The most common versions are total corners (over or under a set number, often 9.5 or 10.5), first corner (which team wins it), and corner handicaps, where one side starts with a head start or deficit built into the number.

Volume varies a lot by team. Premier League matches are averaging 9.93 corners per game so far in the 2025/26 season, according to corner-stats tracker APWin, but that league figure hides a wide spread between sides.

How Analysts Predict Corner Counts

League averages only go so far, since corner counts swing heavily on team style and matchup. A few factors carry more weight than others:

• How much a team relies on wide play and crossing, rather than cutting through the middle
• Whether the underdog is expected to sit deep and defend, since desperate clearances tend to go out for corners
• Recent corner counts for both sides, not just the season-long average
• Home advantage, since home teams generally attack more and win more corners

A heavy favourite hosting a side that parks the bus often produces more corners than the raw form table suggests, simply because the underdog spends most of the match clearing its lines.

Responsible Gambling – Bet With Discipline

Corner markets can feel like a safer bet than picking a winner, but they carry the same risk as any other market. A single deflection, a change in tactics at half-time, or a game that opens up late can swing a corner count either way. Set a budget before kickoff and stick to it, treat corner stats as a guide rather than a promise, and remember that even the highest-volume team can have a quiet day. Frequently Asked Questions

What are corners in soccer?

A corner, or corner kick, is how play restarts after the ball goes out over the goal line off a defending player, without a goal being scored. The attacking team kicks it back in from the corner arc nearest to where it went out, usually crossing it into the penalty area.

How many corners does a Premier League match average?

Premier League matches are averaging 9.93 corners per game in the 2025/26 season, according to APWin, though individual teams vary widely, from West Ham’s 11.06 down to Sunderland’s 8.89.

Can you score directly from a corner kick?

Yes. It’s legal and it does happen, just rarely, since it usually takes an unlucky deflection or a well-struck in-swinger for the ball to beat everyone and go straight in.

Is the offside rule in effect during a corner kick?

No. A player can’t be flagged offside receiving the ball directly from a corner, which is part of why teams pack the box with attackers for these situations.

What is the corners betting market?

It’s a way to bet on the total number of corners in a match, which team wins the first corner, or a corner-based handicap, separate from betting on the match result itself.

How do bettors predict how many corners a match will have?

By weighing team style, particularly how much a side relies on crosses and wide play, along with home advantage and whether the underdog is likely to sit deep and defend, since that tends to push the corner count up.
